My brother is the only one of the three of us who was given a middle name when the birth was registered. My mother wanted straightforward simple names—Ann, Judith and Ian—but Dad took me with him and I apparently had heard the name Leslie and liked it and persuaded him to add it to 'Ian' for the registration. I'm not sure that Mum—or Ian, come to that!—ever forgave us.
