I was born in Middlesex on 6 February 1943.  I am the oldest of three, having a sister called Judi and a brother called Ian (Leslie).

I left school to go into nursing at Guy's—after a gap year working in a library—but left after the first three months and took up my second choice career of the Civil Service, as that was where my father had always worked.  I joined the Inland Revenue in 1961 and I retired officially on 6 February 2003, although I had finished working on 31 October 2002 in order to prepare for the move to Spain.  During my time in the Inland Revenue I have had two breaks—one of nearly ten years when my children were young, and another of four years in private accountancy practice in the 80s.

I have two children, Sharon and Paul, and Sharon has two girls, Emily (1994) and Victoria (1997).
