| We saw this house and fell in love
with it on Saturday 7 September 2002 - and paid the deposit that afternoon!
One of the main dilemmas in our minds before we came out to look was whether we should go for a new house—and perhaps wait eighteen months or more for it to be built—or choose a completed one and start knocking out doors and arches for Bill's wheelchair. When we saw this house it was the perfect compromise. The top floor just needed plastering and tiling, but the underbuild had only load-bearing walls, leaving us to design Bill's area to give him all the space he needs! The builders said it would take six weeks to complete, but, as this is Spain, that was over-optimistic! Who was it said that the Spanish are great starters, but lousy finishers? The house was eventually completed and we moved in on 20 March 2003. The plot on which the villa stands is 855sqm and the back faces south. The builders put in a monumental staircase to connect the top floor with Bill's floor so that I wouldn't have to go out the front door in my nightdress if he needed anything in a hurry! We had wanted a simple spiral staircase but the builder told us that 'they don't do spiral staircases in Spain'—we have since seen lots of them! There is also a third floor at ground level at the back and this has now been converted from pigeon lofts to a kitchen-cum-studio and a shower/changing room for the pool. The garden at the back was originally three overgrown terraces of orange trees, grass and bougainvillea. In our minds' eye, though, we could see a pool in a tiled surround, a terrace of shady trees with a bench for enjoying the view in peace, and a riot of flowers over the back wall. The riot of flowers is coming on well, and the pool in the top terrace is due to be completed soon. Watch this space! The view from the terrace is
