Lower Terrace

Peter worked very hard on clearing the orange trees from this terrace and cutting back the old overgrown bougainvillea.  There wasn't really anything that was worth saving so he had to clear and get rid of an awful lot of weeds and rubbish.

We decided that the terrace would be planted with various flowers and bushes, the majority of which would bear red flowers or leaves, thus setting off the greenery to perfection.  (You know that Constable always included a touch of red in his landscapes to make the greens even richer, don't you?)  We thought this would look much nicer for the neighbours and people walking or driving up the hill, even though we can hardly see it from the house.  In order to minimise the maintenance, Peter covered the ground  with weed-suppressing membrane, and then with the same gravel as we have used in the Japanese bed, before the planting began.

Most of the plants came from Natura in Denia, who have a good selection of healthy plants.  We included ivies, to fall over the wall down to the road, and poinsettia, hibiscus, a white bougainvillea (for a change!), aloe arborescens, yucca, cypresses, ricinus, and canna lilies all of which are doing well. It certainly looks a treat from our neighbours' terrace, and it can only improve as it fills out over the next couple  of years.
