We have always been fond of jazz. When we were in England we used to go to Warner Jazz weekends organised by Denise and Tony Lawrence of Storeyville Tickle. They were—and presumably still are—a great band, based in Reading, Berks. We went to weekends at Norton Grange on the Isle of Wight, Bodelwyddan in North Wales, and Holme Lacy near Hereford. There were many other venues as well, and some of our jazz acquaintances used to go to seven or eight of these weekends through the year instead of one or more conventional holidays.
When we got to Spain we saw advertisements for the Jubilee Jazz Band, playing at El Cid at Benidoleig, and thought that we would go and see them when we were a bit more organised. Unfortunately, by the time that we decided we were ready to visit, the winter Jazz Club had finished! Then we found that they were doing a Jazz Barbecue in July 2003 and booked up for that. We had a lovely evening on the pool terrace, eating barbecued chicken and listening to the music. Another evening was planned for a couple of weeks later but it had to be cancelled because of management problems at El Cid. Eventually, after e-mail contacts and visits, the Band returned to El Cid at the end of November 2003 for another season. Since this is only some 15 minutes drive from us we visited them there quite regularly on Friday evenings until they finished later in the year.
In 2004 they started playing at Monroes in Pedreguer on Tuesday evenings and this is still continuing (Spring 2005). They are very popular and it is advisable to book your table in advance if you don't want to get turned away!
Future events are advertised in the local papers but I offered to build a website for them to broaden their scope and they liked the idea. I gathered the information and registered a name for the site but for various reasons it didn't get off the ground. The idea has not been officially turned down, but there does not appear to be anything happening at present.
