This Club was started by Jacqui Bevan in December 2002 and I read about it in the Costa Blanca News shortly after we arrived in Spain in January 2003. I rang Jacqui and asked her if ladies from the Orba Valley were allowed to come. She replied that they were not proud, and didn't mind where we came from! I spoke to Sue, who lives in Beniarbeig and we decided that it would be a good way of meeting new people and we went to the meeting at the end of January 2003. I drove from Benitachell to Beniarbeig—about 45 minutes—and it was my first solo drive in Spain! Sue introduced me to her neighbour, Christine, who had decided she would come as well. Although she was not new to Spain, having lived here for about 17 years, she had only been in Beniarbeig for about six months.
We had a very enjoyable dinner at the Salamanca in Jalon—where the food is always excellent—and a talk on detoxing, which was interesting! There were about fifty ladies and the noise levels rose in accordance with the wine consumed. By the time I rang Peter to say I was leaving, the background noise was so great that he couldn't hear a thing! I had to go out in the courtyard to make myself heard.
I went to most of the meetings for a year or so and met some interesting people, as the policy is to sit on a table with some people you don't know. We had talks, fund-raising evenings, fashion shows, a Christmas shopping trip to Valencia, and even a Christmas trip to the Benidorm Palace to which the men were invited!
I stopped going because the club increased in size and had to move from the Salamanca to another restaurant that I didn't like as much. And the increased numbers of members attending made it difficult to meet people and have a good chat. Perhaps I just found that it was a victim of its own success! And I was getting progressively busier with other things by then.
The club is still running and some details are available in the ThinkSpain website (in the Web Site Directory, in alphabetical order under 'Social') which is linked with the CB Friday, and as far as I know it is still open for new members to join. You have to ring Jacqui on 669 98 79 76 to book your place at a meeting— particularly if you haven't been before!
