Bill check out Liverpool Football Club
"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that." Bill Shankly
Bill's favourite sport has always been football, although, during his years in the RAF, he tried almost everything. He didn't get on too well with judo, though, as he broke his shoulder blade in his first lesson! And he was banned from playing Rugby because he broke an opponent's ankle in each of his first two matches!
He was the Junior Cross Country Champion of the RAF at one point and was also tried out for the RAF football team, although he was not selected.
After he left the RAF he concentrated on Sunday League football, despite having damaged his back by then, and also worked out at the gym twice a week. One of his proud boasts was that he could do 100 sit-ups in one minute—and he frequently did.
He stopped playing football in 1984 when I threw his boots away. He had got to the stage where he put his back out every Sunday while playing, and spent the whole of the week trying to get it fit enough to play again the following Sunday—when he put it out again!
He is now a spectator, and a connoisseur of all the different channels on which he can find a dose of his favourite fix. He supports Liverpool, and has done so since the glory days of Bill Shankly. In addition, he is now taking an interest in Real Madrid, and, to a lesser extent, in Valencia since they are more local to us. I don't know whether it helps that David Beckham is now Real's number 23, or whether he is still 'tainted' by the past connection with Man Utd!
